Local Nature Reserves

Ashpits Pond & Pwll Lagoon, Carreg Cennen Woodland, Glan yr Afon, North Dock Dunes, Pembrey Burrows & Saltings, Parc Natur Penglais, Pendinas & Tan y Bwlch, Freshwater East and Pembroke Upper Mill Ponds.

A Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is a statutory designation made under Section 21 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 by principal local authorities. Parish and Town Councils can also declare LNRs but they must have the powers to do so delegated to them by a principal local authority.

When declaring a LNR, the local authority accepts responsibility for ensuring that the special interest of the land is maintained and that it is managed so that the features that gave the place its special interest are maintained. LNRs can help local authorities meet Local Agenda 21, Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) and Sustainable Development targets.

LNRs are for both people and wildlife. They are places with wildlife or geological features that are of special interest locally. They offer people special opportunities to study or learn about nature or simply to enjoy it.

There are 9 LNRs in West Wales, 5 in Carmarthenshire, 2 in Ceredigion and 2 in Pembrokeshire.
