Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are areas that are designated protection under the EC Habitats Directive. The Directive requires the establishment of a European network of important conservation sites that will make a significant contribution to conserving the habitat types and species (excluding birds) identified in Annexes I and II of the Directive.
These protected areas, as well as the SPAs, are known as Natura 2000 sites.
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee website has a more detailed description of SACs as well as a list of SACs in Wales.
