Grasslands

map generated from Phase 1 vegetation survey of Wales (Countryside Council for Wales)

This map shows natural grasslands in West Wales and excludes improved grasslands

Across the British Isles grasslands vary with geographical location and soil chemistry. On limestone or chalk soils grasslands have greater floral diversity than on neutral or acidic soils. Agricultural practices have resulted in the decline of traditional grasslands in Britain.

Hay meadows are still a feature of many Welsh farms and their existance has been promoted by Tir Gofal the agri-environment scheme. These meadows are diverse in grass and wild flower species and are often not cut until July so seeds have time to drop. They attract butterflies, grasshoppers and many more invertebrates that feed a diverse bird population.
