Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

For ordnance survey information on the national grid see the ordnance survey website.

It is important to take an accurate grid reference, 6 figure grid references are usable but 8 figure references are preferred. Click here for a document on how to take a 6 figure grid reference.

Computers and particularly GIS now enable conservationists to manage complex spatial information in layer upon layer and extract a report for a particular location at the click of a button.

Because we are a non-profit organisation, WWBIC has been awarded 'associated site' status by Eduserv Chest and this has enabled us to purchase a formidable suite of ArcView and ArcInfo GIS software from ESRI-UK at considerable discount from them using funds granted to us by Visit Wales - this represents a huge sponsorship to us and will enable us to carry out our work most efficiently.

To view any interactive maps that we will publish on this site in the near future you can download for free ESRI's viewer called ArcReader here. ESRI also provide for free a lightweight version of their GIS called ArcExplorer here. Use Reader if you want to view, manipulate and print published interactive maps (pmf extension) - these will source the data from our server; use Explorer if you have raw map data on your own computer (shapefiles etc).

We are also trialling ESRIS's mobile GIS called ArcPAD on handheld computers in the field to accurately record the positions of veteran trees.

For now, these are some image files of our maps...
