The class Mammalia is divided into marsupials (Marsupialia) and placental mammals (Eutheria). The placental mammals are divided into several orders that contain many species native to Britain, those that occur in west Wales are listed below.

Bats (order: Chiroptera)

Foxes, Badgers & Seals (order: Carnivora)

Whales, Dolphins & Porpoises (order: Cetacea)

Rodents (order: Rodentia)

Rabbits and Hares (order: Lagmorpha)

Deer (order: Artiodactyla)

Hedgehogs, Moles & Shrews (order: Insectivora)
