Moths

Burnett Moth, Sarah Beynon.
Pembrokeshire Moths
The earliest records for moths in Pembrokeshire go back more than 100 years. In 1875, shortly after having moved into the County and taken up residence in Pembroke, the great lepidopterist, C. G. Barrett, published a list of some 300 species of moths and butterflies he had seen here in his travels in and around the County. Barrett’s original list is available on the Pembrokeshire Lepidoptera web site at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/vc45leps/reports.html. The list gives the names that Barrett used as scientific and vernacular for the various species and, in many cases, their modern equivalents.

Today’s Pembrokeshire Lepidoptera Database is held in digital format using MapMate® software here with a total of nearly 200,000 records of moths and butterflies of 1,268 different taxa from the County. This latter number is being increased each year as new species to the County are found. During the summer months, from April until October, the North Pembrokeshire Moth Group meet regularly to trap at interesting and important sites and, over the past few years, have added many new species to the County List, including one species new to Wales and another, yet to be determined, that may be new to Britain. The full County list for the County is available on the Pembrokeshire Lepidoptera web site at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/vc45leps/reports.html.
