Gall pawb adnabod y Gwningen, ond mae’n syndod nad yw wedi’i gofnodi’n ddigonol! Gellir eu canfod mewn ardaloedd trefol a gerddi, coetir collddail, glaswelltir, coetir cymysg, a thir âr.
Mae cwningod yn bwyta amrywiaeth eang o blanhigion gan gynnwys gweiriau, cnydau grawn, gwreiddlysiau ac egin ifanc o blanhigion y ddôl. Byddant yn bwyta rhisgl coed yn enwedig pan fo eira yn gorchuddio ffynonellau bwyd eraill.
Olion Traed: Gellir gweld traciau mewn llaid a thywod, ond yn aml mae’n haws eu hadnabod mewn eira, fel y gwelir yn y llun. Mae olion traed cwningen yn debyg i ysgyfarnog, ond yn llai o ran maint. Pedwar pad ar y traed blaen ac ôl. Mae traed ôl yn aml yn argraff hir siâp sliper. Lled 2.5cm, hyd 3.5cm.
Baw: Mae baw i’w gael yn aml mewn cynefinoedd glaswelltir, ymylon caeau a gwrychoedd. Gellir dod o hyd iddynt mewn casgliad trwchus o belenni ar nodwedd amlwg (e.e. bryn morgrug). 10mm mewn diamedr. Lliw: brown-gwyrdd melynaidd. Arogl: Arogl melys, fel bisged dreulio llaith gydag awgrym o wair wedi’i dorri.
Mae gan yr oedolyn gragen galed, denau, galchaidd 25–40mm mewn diamedr a 25–35mm o uchder, gyda phedair neu bum tro. Mae’r gragen yn amrywio o ran lliw, ond yn gyffredinol mae ganddi batrwm o frown tywyll, brown-euraidd, neu gastanwydden gyda streipiau melyn, brychau, neu rediadau (bandiau lliw brown a ymyrrwyd yn nodweddiadol). Mae’r agorfa yn fawr ac yn nodweddiadol ‘oblique’, mae ei ymyl mewn oedolion yn wyn ac yn cael ei adlewyrchu.
Mae’r corff yn feddal ac yn llysnafeddog, yn llwydfrown, ac yn gallu cael ei dynnu’n ôl yn gyfan gwbl i’r gragen, rhywbeth y mae’r anifail yn ei wneud pan fydd yn segur neu dan fygythiad.
Mae gan dyrchod daear ffwr melfedaidd byr, du fel arfer, gyda blaenelimau tebyg i rhaw a chrafangau mawr sy’n wynebu tu ôl i’r anifail. Trwyn cigog pinc a llygaid bach. Maent yn bresennol yn y rhan fwyaf o gynefinoedd lle mae’r pridd yn ddigon dwfn i ganiatáu twnelu ond maent yn anghyffredin mewn coedwigoedd conwydd, ar rostiroedd ac mewn twyni tywod, mae’n debyg oherwydd bod eu hysglyfaeth yn brin.
Mae tyrchod daear yn treulio bron eu holl fywyd dan ddaear mewn system o dwneli parhaol a lled-barhaol. Mae twneli arwyneb fel arfer yn fyrhoedlog ac yn digwydd mewn caeau newydd eu trin, mewn ardaloedd o bridd tywodlyd ysgafn ac mewn priddoedd bas iawn, lle mae ysglyfaeth wedi’i grynhoi ychydig o dan yr wyneb.
Molehills: Molehills yw’r arwydd cae nodweddiadol a hawdd ei adnabod i gofnodi presenoldeb tyrchod daear. Mae Molehills yn cynnwys pridd rhydd pur. Pan fydd tyrchod daear yn cloddio, maen nhw’n gwthio’r pridd llacio i fyny siafft i’r wyneb, gan ffurfio pentyrrau o bridd. Mae’r bryniau tyrchod hyn yn hawdd i’w gweld ac yn dynodi presenoldeb tyrchod daear. Mae tyrchod daear yn defnyddio twrch daear fel ffynhonnell fwyd, yn enwedig ar gyfer pryfed genwair a phryfed.
Mae gwlithen y Seler Werdd yn un o ddwy rywogaeth o wlithen y seler (y llall yw’r Wlithen Seler Felen), mae’n hysbys bod y ddwy rywogaeth hon o wlithod yn detritifysydd, yn bwydo ar ddeunydd planhigion sy’n pydru mewn gerddi. Nid ydynt yn cael eu hystyried yn blâu planhigion gan nad ydynt yn bwydo ar ddeunydd planhigion byw.
Mae gan wlithen y Seler Werdd gyrff gwyrdd-felyn a tentaclau glas/llwyd. Y gwahaniaeth rhwng y Wlithen Seler Werdd a Melyn yw bod gan y rhywogaeth Felen streipen felen hir ar hyd canol ei chynffon, mae hyn yn fyrrach neu’n absennol ar Wlithen y Seler Werdd. Mae Gwlithen y Seler Werdd hefyd yn cyfrinachu llysnafedd melyn clir. Am fwy o wybodaeth gweler yma.
Mae’r ddwy rywogaeth o wlithod y seler yn nosol iawn, a dyna pam rydym yn gofyn i chi edrych amdanynt ar ôl iddi dywyllu pan fydd y gwlithod yn actif. Gallwch hefyd ddod o hyd i’r rhywogaethau cymdeithasol hyn yn gorffwys o dan foncyffion, palmentydd, mewn draeniau ac o dan wrthrychau eraill yn ystod y dydd. Yma maent yn ffurfio ‘huddles’ nodweddiadol i helpu i gadw lleithder. Efallai y gwelwch y ddwy rywogaeth o wlithen seler yn yr un ‘huddle’!
Mae’r draenog yn gyffredin mewn parciau, gerddi a thir fferm ar draws Prydain ac Iwerddon. Mae’n well ganddynt ymylon coetir, perthi a chynefinoedd maestrefol lle mae digon o fwyd ar eu cyfer. Mae’n debyg bod tir âr sy’n cael ei ffermio’n ddwys yn gynefin gwael, fel y mae rhostiroedd a choedwigoedd conwydd trwchus.
Olion Traed: Mae’n well adnabod llwybrau draenogod trwy ddefnyddio twnnel ôl troed. Maent yn bum toed, gyda chrafang miniog ar y diwedd. Maent yn 28mm o led a 25mm o hyd. I gofnodi olion traed, gellir gosod twnnel ochr yn ochr â gwrychoedd ac mewn gerddi. Mae canllaw ôl troed a phrotocol ar gael gan y Gymdeithas Mamaliaid.
Baw: Gellir eu canfod mewn glaswelltir a ffermdir, ac yng ngerddi pobl. Maent yn grinciog, yn aml yn serennog â darnau sgleiniog oherwydd eu diet o bryfed. Maint amrywiol, 15-50mm o hyd, 8-10mm o drwch. Lliw: glas-du. Arogl: Melys, awgrym o olew had llin.
Mae copyn yr Ardd yn un o’r pryfed cop sy’n haws ei adnabod. Fel arfer mae’n llwyd-frown neu’n goch-frown ei liw, gyda chroes wen fawr (sy’n cynnwys smotiau golau a rhediadau) ar ei abdomen. Mae benywod ddwywaith maint y gwrywod.
Corynnod gardd yw’r corryn gwe coryn mwyaf cyffredin yn y DU a geir yn aml mewn gerddi, gan roi eu henw yn saesneg iddynt! Maent yn eistedd yng nghanol y we yn aros i deimlo dirgryniadau pryfed sy’n ei chael hi’n anodd yn edafedd gludiog ei we. Yna maent yn rhuthro allan ac yn lapio eu hysglyfaeth yn dynn mewn sidan i’w hatal rhag symud – gan orffen y swydd gyda brathiad gwenwynig (sy’n ddiniwed i bobl)!
