Breeding Bird Survey training
Gethin from the BTO is running four free Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) training events in West Wales this spring at the following locations:
National Botanic Gardens of Wales (15/02 9:00 – 11:30)
Narberth (23/02 9:00-11:30)
WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre (08/03 9:30-12:00)
Wales Wildlife Centre (15/03 9:00-11:30)
Although only taking a few hours of your time a year, BBS is an incredibly valuable survey. It tells us much about the state of our commoner birds and the condition of our landscapes more widely. West Wales is a very under-recorded region in Wales, so new volunteers joining the local BBS team would be especially appreciated. Below is a map of vacant 1 km2 to survey. Could you give your time to monitor one this spring?
In this session we’ll first go through the basics of the survey with some refreshments before practising outside. Please note however, this isn’t a bird ID session, and is aimed for those relatively confident in bird ID by sight, song and call for the commoner bird of Wales.
Songbird ID practice
Gethin will also be running two sessions on Songbird ID. These sessions are welcome to all levels of ID skills. Here we’ll go over some useful memory aids to recognise birds, as well as take part in some activities to boost your skills in time for the crescendo of the dawn chorus this spring. These sessions will cost £10, and take place at the following locations:
WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre (08/03 13:00-15:00)
Wales Wildlife Centre (15/03 06:00-08:00)
