Wales Garden BioBlitz is back for Wales Nature Week 2021!

To kick off Wales Nature Week, join LERC Wales* staff for a national nature hunt in your own garden! On Saturday 29th May, wildlife lovers across Wales are invited “BioBlitz” their garden, by looking for species common and rare to contribute to our Wales wide species snapshot.

When: Saturday 29th May Midnight – Midnight

Where: Your own garden (or a local park)

What: Record all the species you can find in your garden for 24 hours to build a national species snapshot for Wales Nature Week

How: Follow the fun on Facebook and Twitter with #WalesGardenBioBlitz21 and send us your garden species records via the LERC Wales App (or alternative recording route**)

Why: Have fun learning about the nature in your garden, and contribute useful data to help wildlife conservation.

Suggested timeline for your wildlife hunt

5am: Dawn Chorus – early risers can share the experience of the wonders of dawn during May

8am: Marvellous Moths – live updates from the traps of LERC Wales staff

11am: Perfect Pollinators – Watch your flower beds to see what bees, butterflies and other winged wonders visit

2pm: Zoom an Expert – join our Zoom call to share your findings and ask for help with species identification

3pm: Wonderful Wildflowers – what wild flowers can you find in your lawn / pavement cracks / flower beds

6pm: Cool creepy crawlies – look under logs and rummage through rocks to look for slugs, snails and woodlice

9pm: Twilight highlights – Listen for bats, shine a spotlight on spiders, and hunt for hedgehogs… what nocturnal visitors you can find after dark?

*LERC Wales is a consortium of the four Local Environmental Records Centres in Wales: BISCofnodSEWBReC and WWBIC. Each LERC collates wildlife records for their area of Wales, and provides this information to decision makers whilst supporting the local recording community.

**We will be counting all records received for 29th May as part of the event. If you are an established recorder, please use your preferred submission method, e.g. iRecord or your LERC’s online system. If you are new to recording, we suggest the LERC Wales App as the easiest method of sending us data. Alternatively download this spreadsheet and return it to carys@westwalesbiodiversity.org.uk.
